The Importance of Learning Spanish:
A Journey of Language, Culture, and Connection

By Vicky Regalado
Vicky Regalado is the Spanish teacher at ESN.

At Episcopal School, I have the privilege of teaching Spanish a beautiful and deeply enriching language that opens doors not just to communication but to a profound understanding of the world. Spanish one of the Romance languages, is much more than words on a page or sounds spoken aloud. It is a bridge to diverse cultures, an opportunity to connect with millions of people, and a path to personal and global growth.

In my classroom, I guide students to read, write, and speak Spanish, but my mission goes beyond language acquisition. I encourage my students to explore the vibrant cultures that make up the Spanish-speaking world. From traditions and customs to music and art, learning Spanish is a celebration of diversity. It’s a reminder that each of us has our own unique culture, and yet, we all share the human experience.

In the United States, where Latinos play a vital role in shaping society, understanding Spanish provides students with the tools to engage meaningfully. A simple conversation, a friendly introduction or asking someone about their day, can build bridges of understanding and respect. Beyond verbal communication, students also learn about body language, an essential part of expressing care and respect across cultures.

Spanish class is where I get to truly know my students, celebrate their individuality, and teach them the universal language of love and respect. It’s a space where they are encouraged to step outside their comfort zones and embrace new perspectives, not just as learners but as global citizens.

The journey of learning Spanish is more than a linguistic exercise; it’s a lifelong gift. It empowers students to connect with others, appreciate cultural richness, and foster understanding in a world that thrives on diversity. Teaching Spanish is a blessing, and it is my joy to inspire these young minds to explore, grow, and become compassionate members of our shared global community.

Let’s continue to celebrate language, culture, and the beauty of connection, one Spanish word at a time.
